3rd Wave Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Do you feel like you have to force yourself to to get out of bed in the morning? Everything you've tried hasn't worked. Perhaps your struggle is with the struggle.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a powerful new psychotherapy based on cutting-edge research into how the human mind works. It has been clinically proven to be successful in a wide range of psychological problems.

Human life has an element of suffering, both physically and emotionally. Since we don't like to feel pain, we learn to avoid, eliminate or control the pain. This strategy may work in the short term but is always there bubbling under the surface preventing us from becoming the person we would like to be.

ACT teaches us to let go of the struggle we face every day. As human beings, we find solutions to most problems, so when we find ourselves living with depression, anxiety, chronic pain or unhelpful behaviours our frustration builds because these are problems that we cannot seem to fix.

ACT invites us to stay in the present moment and by doing so teaches us to learn to listen to our thoughts, feelings, and actions.  ACT gives us the courage to accept that which we have but don't want. ACT helps us to form a workable relationship with past events, to sit with the ‘elephant’ in the room.

ACT teaches that we are not our thoughts, and that beliefs are not facts. ACT is value based and committed to action and living our lives with courage and determination.

ACT has gathered a wealth of positive outcomes in clinical studies for a wide range of benefit in physical and psychological issues.

Compassion Focused Therapy

I use Compassion Focused Therapy to help clients overcome shame, self-loathing, and self-criticism. Dark places where there is a distinct lack of self compassion and love.

Everyone will experience pain in their lives. The goal of CFT is to alleviate suffering by developing compassion for yourself and others. This approach has the qualities of non-judgement, strength, warmth, empathy, wisdom, kindness, and moral courage.

CFT encompasses a range of Eastern and Western approaches to develop wellbeing.

Mindfulness, attention training, and imagery through clinical hypnosis and meditation combine with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and other Western mainstream therapies to help you become the person you want to be.

I have found CFT useful for working with diverse conditions such as depression, anxiety and trauma.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy helps people to manage overwhelming emotions and stress. This level of stress is at such a profound level it often completely incapacitates individuals. The net result is people who are afraid to show any emotions or to participate in emotional situations with others. This physiological issue can be rooted from birth or as a result of childhood experiences.

My approach is to help you build your resistance to being overwhelmed by emotions and provide you with new strategies to gradually introduce you to emotional situations. Together we will reduce your thoughts of past traumatic experiences or forward thinking to future scenarios. We will also tackle the corrosive self judgements you may place on yourself or others.

Learning Emotional Regulation will help you to take small ‘bites’ from frightening emotional situations and deal with the feelings in your own way and time.

Finally we strengthen your confidence to express your needs and set boundaries with others in a fair non judgmental way which also recognises their individuality.
